Department of Sports relaunches excellence awards

WIltshire-IIBasseterre, St. Kitts, 12th July, 2017 ( - Students who participated in sports this year will receive awards of recognition for their achievement during a ceremony coordinated by the Department of Sports.

The grand event will take place at Government House on Wednesday, 12th July, at Government House.

After a 10-year hiatus, the Department of Sport revived its Sports Excellence Awards. Now, the Department intends to hold the program annually.

Children and students, from primary schools up to CFBC, will be recognized for their achievements in sports throughout the year.

In addition, several employees of the Department of Sports, as well as business entities that have contributed to the Department of Sports programs will receive awards.

Commenting on the awards program, Director of Sports Anthony Wiltshire said, “The awards program is something for the recipients to realize how much we appreciate their performance, their involvement and their input.”

And on the possible impact of awards for the young sportspersons, he stated, “Some people are motivated intrinsically, others extrinsically. We are aware that the students, having performed, will be looking for something they can relate to, that they are able in years to come to reflect and say, ‘When I was at this stage, this is what I was doing’. Many of us have been involved in sports over the years, and we have nothing to show for it.”

The featured speaker will be the former Chief Medical Officer and sports enthusiast Dr. Patrick Martin. The Minister of Sports is off-island and will be represented by Tourism Minister Lindsay Grant.

Awards will be presented in seven disciplines: Cricket, Football, Tennis, Netball, Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field.

Three recipients will receive awards in each of these categories, from the Primary and Secondary Schools plus the CFBC.

Among the awards are those for the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, the Academic Excellence Award, the Primary School of the Year, the High School of the Year, Coach of the Year and several other awards.
